Daphnia Magna (water fleas)

FEEDING

Left on there own in a pond or large outside container there is no need for feeding as they will have more than ample natural food supply. A container of water left in a sunny location and filled with old tank water will also do well on it's own.

If you intend to keep in Daphnia in smaller indoor containers and can not keep them in a well lit area then follow the feeding instructions below. Remember that the trick feeding is to only feed in tiny amounts just until the water clouds and not to re feed until the water totally clears.

when feeding almost any organic matter in suspension will be acceptable. Some examples include:

  1. Sprinkle dry yeast on the water surface.
  2. Mix 1 part fish food or other animal chow such as rabbit or dry dog food with 2 parts water to create a Daphnia "milkshake" (keep refrigerated). Pour some of this mixture into the water (about 3 Tbls. Per feeding for a 10 gallon aquarium).
  3. When allowing the water to stand, add a head of lettuce. At the end of the week the water should be a nice green color and contain organic particles for the Daphnia to eat.
